The Hanging of Marie Angelique                                      2007 Andy McGaw

This is the story of Marie Angelique
Pretty as a sparrow black as ebony
Forever be damned and for no good concern
For she loved a white man who loved her in return
For she loved a white man who loved her in return

They rolled in their passion neith the blanket of the night
Their hearts filled with true love and their eyes filled with freight
A fire did burn and the river it did run
For the mind’s eyes are many but the heart has but one
For the mind’s eyes are many but the heart has but one

The charge it was laid soon the verdict it did come
For all to bare witness spare not a one
Of Marie Angelique they would make clear intention
They’d show her no mercy and make no pretension

Now Marie Angelique stood small on the wood
The hangman stood cold as all good hangmen should
And she stared in the faces of the cold hearts that slander
She whispered a prayer and the good hangman hanged her
She whispered a prayer and the good hangman hanged her

Now Marie Angelique lay dead on the ground
With her face in a bag from her heart not a sound
Her spirit to wander forever tormented
The archangels came but they could not defend it
The archangels came but they could not defend it

And her lover dear lover now sleepless and cold
Forever rejected for the story is told
The windows of memory of crystal clear pain
He hides his hard crying with a walk in the rain
He hides his hard crying with a walk in the rain

A fire did burn and the river it did run
For the mind’s eyes are many but the heart has but one
For the mind’s eyes are many but the heart has but one
